Company History

1846: In Leipzig, in a mill called „Nonnenmuhle“, members of the Weber family first began waterproofing pieces of cardboard to be used as book covers.  This was to be the cornerstone of what VEDAG is today.

1851: In Leipzig, Carl Friedrich Weber began producing cold tar felt for use as a roofing material.

1882: Roofing membranes start being produced in rolls.

1927: Vereinigte Dachpappen AG is founded with its head office in Berlin which resulted in the setting up or acquisition of several factories mainly based throughout East Germany.

1935: Vereinigte Dachpappen AG is acquired by the chemical group Rutgerswerke AG – making it at that time, the largest manufacturer of bitumen roofing membranes

In the 1950’s and 60’s, the company gains recognition through the development of complete roofing systems.  A huge step forward is taken by replacing the roofing paper with a polyester fleece as a carrier and the development of polymer bitumen.  The company is at the forefront of all development initiatives, including cold applied adhesive systems, which came in to the market in the late 60’s, early 70’s.  They again led the field in the 80’s with regard to recycling old roofs.

1994/1995: The company is taken over by the RHI Group, which then adopted the trading name of Vedag Dachsysteme GmbH & Co KG (Vedag Roofing Systems).  Expansion in to Eastern Europe is accelerated with the setting up of sales offices in the Czech Republic and Poland - 1997 then saw the opening of an office in Slova

1998: All operational activities in relation to the waterproofing market sector are consolidated in the RHI Insulation Division, VEDAG becomes the strategic leader of this division

In January 2002 , ownership and shares in the Austrian and Hungarian companies are sold and Vedag concentrates its efforts on its core markets.  The sales operation within Germany is further developed to allow it to become more focused at meeting market demands.  From now on, Vedag has two routes to market:

1.A sales organisation with approximately 40 regional Business Managers responsible for product marketing and providing technical support to architects and installers on the innovative and technically advanced flat roofing systems.

2.A roofing trade orientated organisation focused on providing the market with high value bitumen and polymer bitumen membrane products.

Both routes to market are supported by strong application technology.  The company employs nearly 100 people within its German sales operation.

2003: The Czech production site in Litvinov is acquired, modernised and expanded

2007: Following approval from the monopolies commission, VEDAG GmbH became a member of the Icopal Group.  This relationship strengthens the Icopal Group’s position within the international market and VEDAG will continue to trade as a separate brand.  This represents a milestone in the development of the European waterproofing market. In China, VEDAG GmbH has set up D-veda for developing Chinese market.
